The Photographs of Lew Allen, Elvis & The Birth of Rock

The Leinster Gallery is proud to present Elvis & The Birth of Rock, an exhibition of photographs taken by Lew Allen between 1956 and 1958.
On November 23rd 1956, a 17-year-old boy from Cleveland, a keen photographer who worked for his high school newspaper, was invited to photograph Elvis Presley at the Cleveland Arena, Ohio. A labour strike at the three major newspapers in Cleveland meant that Lew Allen was the only photographer at the show. Subsequently, while a photography student at the Rochester Institute of Technology, Lew Allen was able to photgraph Buddy Holly, The Everly Brothers and several now-legendary groups performing at two early Rock & Roll tours in Rochester.
Elvis & The Birth of Rock presents the photographs of Lew Allen taken between 1956 and 1958. Interspersed among the photographs of Elvis taken at the Cleveland Arena, are images from the shows in Rochester, New York.
The Exhibition features 30 prints produced with vintage technology on fiber based, silver gellatin archival paper.
A limited edition postcard pack containing 10 postcards displaying Lew Allen's images will also be available.
Accompanying the exhibition will be the limited edition book "Elvis & The Birth of Rock" produced by Genesis Publications which contains the photographs of Lew Allen and was edited by Mike McCartney.
