Manus Walsh, Horizons
24th April - 8th May 2008

A Solo Exhibition of new paintings by Manus Walsh featuring works completed in Ballyvaughan, Villanueva del Trabuco and Pedregalejo, Malaga, over the past year.

Manus Walsh was born in Dublin in 1940. He began his artistic career in the field of stained glass at the Abbey Studios in Dublin in the 1960s. By the late 1960s he had turned to painting as a full time career following encouragement from his close friend and fellow artist George Campbell. In 1976, with his wife and three children, Manus moved to Ballyvaughan, Co. Claire. Living and working surrounded by the unique landscape of the Burren for more than thirty years has had a profound influence on his work.

The development of Manus’s painting has also been affected by his extensive travels, especially thorough Spain and Chile. The landscapes of Spain have had a particular influence, as for the past six years he has had the opportunity to live and work in various locations in Andalucia during the winter months. Chile has also been a major influence in his career, and Manus has had four exhibitions there, the most recent being in La Sebastiana, Valparaiso, the former home of Nobel poet, Pablo Neruda.

Since his first exhibition in Dublin in 1967, Manus has had more than thirty-seven solo shows, including a major retrospective in Galway. Outstanding among his many stained glass designs, were five windows for Galway Cathedral, and more recently, the Michael Greene memorial window which can be seen in St. Johns Church in Ballyvaughan. His work is included in many public and private collections both here and abroad.
