About the artist:
Cecil King was born in Rathdrum Co. Wicklow in 1921. Always an ardent collector, he took up painting in his spare time in 1954, and produced his first painting in the studio of Barbara Warren. Under the influence of Derby-shire born Nevill Johnson in Dublin, he painted semi-abstract pictures depicting water and it's reflection as seen at Ringsend and the Dublin quays. He also painted still life and religious pictures although it is his later, abstract style which he his most remembered for.
In 1956 his work was selected for the Irish Exhibition of Living Art and he continued to show there until 1979 missing only a few years. Also in 1956 his work was exhibited for the first time at the Oireachtas. In 1964 he opted to paint full time and had his first exhibition outside Ireland in the Charing Cross Gallery, Glasgow. Cecil exhibited extensively at important exhibitions all over Ireland and internationally throughout his career. A retrospective held at the Hugh lane Municipal Gallery of Modern Art in 1981 was the artists twenty-ninth one-person show in twenty five years.
A member of Aosdna, King lived in Blackrock, Co. Dublin for many years. He was particularly noted for his support of young artists, as he acted as an assessor of final year students in art colleges around the country.
